Tolerance Analysis-Based Mechanical Design Optimization Software: Enventive

“Using Enventive for traditional tolerance analysis is like using a Maserati to pick up groceries. You can do it, but surely you’d want to use it for more than that.” - Ralph Gifford, President, Enventive Engineering

Tolerance Analysis

The tolerance analysis features in Enventive software take analyzing mechanical engineering designs to another level. Enventive can complete in seconds what requires hours in competing products, including tolerance analysis of forces and of values computed by equations. Enventive makes performing tolerance analysis stack-ups vastly more intuitive and helps users identify dimensioning schemes that are truly functional. While most analysis tools are geared toward specialists, requiring weeks of training and months—or even years—of use to achieve proficiency, Enventive is quick and easy to learn and use. Some of our users would even call it fun.

"I cannot leave a discussion of Enventive without mentioning it is fun to use. The software is graphically based. Sketches and graphical representations of the parts drive the models. This, coupled with the easy to use interface, creates “Stack-up Junkies” who want to do the analysis because the software helps them easily visualize the impact a design change can have on the product."  - Eric Pattok – Delphi Steering Systems

Graphically based tolerance analysis reports

The easy-to-read tolerance analysis report is written to an integrated Excel spreadsheet that is completely interactive with the model.

  • The report includes critical information such as contributor sensitivities and percent of contribution.
  • Root Sum Squared (RSS) results are generated in seconds.
  • Not just geometric analysis! Any computed parameter can be analyzed, and of course, geometric gaps can also be analyzed. Above, we are analyzing friction force.
  • Analysis results generated in Excel display target versus actual.

  • Target Cp values can be specified for each contributor.
  • Pareto chart lists contributors in order of importance.
  • Monte Carlo Setup section facilitates linear Monte Carlo analysis with Crystal Ball and other programs that run on top of Excel.

Work with contributors directly from the report

When selected in the report, contributors are highlighted in the model. And even more importantly, contributors can be perturbed to dynamically and graphically show the impact of contributor variations. Optimization of nominal values and tolerances can be driven directly from the report, and the model and analysis results update immediately.

Analyze and optimize multiple parameters

Enventive lets you analyze multiple parameters to report overall contribution based on the effect contributors have on all analyzed parameters. As for individual analyzed parameters, optimization can be run on a matrix analysis report to achieve optimal parameter values and variation.

As you can see, Enventive's tolerance analysis is not only fast, accurate, and comprehensive -- it is integrated seamlessly with Enventive's conceptual design, performance modeling, and design optimization features as a holistic approach to mechanical engineering design. While tolerance analysis is most often used as a solitary task in later stages of design, Enventive is a comprehensive mechanical engineering design tool that includes tolerance analysis as an integral part of a more effective and efficient design cycle.
